Cricket vs Hartfield

The Wine Trade Sports Club finally got their season up and running on Friday 8th June with a fantastic game of criket at Hartfield. Following two early season cancellations the team were eager and were all in good time for the traditional warm-up in the Anchor.

Winning the toss on a glorius sunny day the WTSC skipper (Christo Eliott Lockhart) elected to bat and look to post a challenging target for Hartfield to chase down. Graeme Harwood and Geoff Taylor were sent into the fray against the new ball pair of Dave Simpson and John Sanders. Starting off watchfully against some tight bowling, unfortunately Harwood was first to fall in the second over fo 0. An expansive drive was mistimed and flew gracefully to Toby Gazzina at mid off.

Graham Cox joined Taylor who continued diligently against the accurate Dave Simpson (who bowled 3 maidens on the trot). THe pressure was building however with the wine trade on 7 for 1 after 6 overs. Then disaster or calamity struck! Certainly a Bidwell trophy contender. Taylor top edged off Simpson, the ball looped up into the air, the keeper (Hartfield Skipper Jawad Akhtar) called for the simplest of catches only for the ball to spill through the gloves directly onto the stumps. Taylor had wandered out of his crease not knowing where the ball had gone and was out...stumped. The Wine trade were in trouble at 7 for 2.
