WTSC Foundation - Ben Campbell-Johnston Memorial Walk

30/07/2017

We are delighted to announce that the Wine Trade Sports Club Foundation charity walk will be taking place on Saturday 9th September 2017.

This year we will be walking in memory of a great friend, colleague and sports club member, Ben Campbell-Johnston, who tragically died in October 2016. We will be walking to raise essential funds for The Benevolent to support the launch of their nationwide Mental Health Awareness campaign within the drinks industry. At the same time 20% of all funds raised will be donated directly to Mind, who provide essential support for those suffering from mental health issues.

Ben was well known across the wine industry as a fortified wine expert and also as co-founder of the Big Fortified Tasting and more recently Fizz. He was an active member of his local community but most of all a much loved husband and father to Kate and Louis. His death at the end of October due to mental health issues came totally out of the blue to everyone he knew.

Mental health problems can affect people in many ways. They affect around one in four people in Britain and range from common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, to more rare problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. A mental health problem can feel just as bad, or worse, as any physical disorder, only you cannot see it.

Most of us know someone who has experienced a mental health problem but in most cases we are blissfully unaware. They can happen to anyone, at anytime. It is therefore important that we provide as much information as possible to ensure that nobody has to suffer in silence and anyone suffering is able to know where they can get help, treatment and support.

Ben was an active member of the Wine Trade Sports Club, often seen charging around the tennis courts of Earlsfield or Dulwich in our tennis tournaments. We are really pleased that his wife, Kate, has given her blessing for us to walk in Ben's memory and raising funds and awareness for the Benevolent's Mental Health Awareness Campaign.

Ben spent several years actively promoting the English sparkling wine industry through the Fizz tasting that he co-founded, so walking around English wine country seemed an appropriate way to remember him.  Hattingley Valley in Hampshire have very generously given us use of their facilities to host the start and finish of the Ben Campbell-Johnston Memorial Walk.

The finer details of the walk will be circulated shortly, but for now, please save the date, get a group of friends, family & colleagues together, set up a fundraising page (click on link and then click start fundraising) and come and join us on Saturday 9th September. This will be a family event, with the walk being around 9-10 miles around the Weald of the South Downs followed by a barbeque.
