WTSC scrape miraculous draw at Piltdown.

04/07/2015

On Saturday 4th July, a crack team of WTSC golfers were assembled to take on the best that Piltdown Golf Club could muster on a beautiful sunny day. With a combination of youth and experience, Chris Porter was confident that he had selected the right team and the morning pairings, certainly on paper, would surely be a shoe-in for the lead going in to lunch!

If only golf was played on paper. The trade had underestimated the importance of local knowledge. Match after match finished long before the the 18th green and the Wine Trade headed in for lunch trailing 4 1/2 to 2 1/2. With fantastic food and a wonderful array of wines the only hope for the trade was that the Piltdown membership would have their curiosity pricked once too often by the vinous delights on offer.

With the sun contining to shine, the afternoon pairings headed out to do battle over 13 holes. Heading off in hope rather than expectation the Wine Trade set about their task in earnest. Using a combination of cunning, skill and lots and lots of fine wine, our Trade secret weapon enfeebled the oppo’ to such a degree that we pulled back to square the match 7-7.

Not quite the Miracle of Medinah – more the Pickling of Piltdown – but a good effort by one and all nevertheless, on and off the course!

Next up Royal St Georges on Monday 13th July.
